Developing the Outdoor Figurative Composition
with Andy Sjodin

This workshop will be a process and preliminary work focused class that will take place over the course of two weekends. The objective of the workshop will be the creation of preliminary work needed to execute a finished outdoor composition involving a clothed figure. Two Saturday afternoons will be spent out “in the field” working from a live model to create sketches, develop color studies, and gather reference images (photographs). Two Sunday afternoons will be spent working in-studio from the created reference materials to develop a well thought out, smaller scale, full-color composition. The goal by the end of the workshop will be for students to have on-hand the necessary preliminary work and knowledge to create a finished outdoor figurative composition back in their own studios.
Andy will contact the students closer to the time of the workshop to briefly go over the supply list and location for the outdoor portion of the workshop.
Dates: Saturday–Sunday, May 24–25 and Saturday–Sunday, May 31 – June 1
Length: 4 days
Time: 1:00pm–5:00pm
Landscape Painting Workshop
with Bridget Ertelt

Bridget is excited to offer this workshop again. This workshop will prepare students to begin to tackle the fun challenge of painting outdoor landscapes on location. Get ready for a lot of information and learning. Day 1 is all about the value structure of the landscape with a focus on creating strong starts. Day 2 will focus on color. Bridget will discuss seeing color as value and organizing color temperatures to achieve various light effects. This workshop is a prerequisite to Bridget's landscape continuing study classes.
Plein-Air Continuing Study
with Bridget Ertelt

Prerequisite: Landscape Painting Workshop
This class will discuss the golden hour and sunsets, but the focus of class time will be an opportunity for students to practice plein-air painting with more instructor assistance at their easel. Bridget’s Landscape Painting Workshop is a prerequisite to this course as it is important to have received a strong foundation of knowledge from which to work.
Tuesdays, June 3, 17, and 24, 2025
Plein-Air Watercolor
with Louise Gillis

The summer is so beautiful, and painting watercolors outside from nature is wonderful! The first two sessions we will work inside and have a tutorial on mixing colors, values and composition and how to paint trees, flowers, skies, etc. We will then go outside to paint in nature and apply the lessons learned. Locations will be at Lake Harriet - land, flowers, water, bandstand with food and bathrooms. In case of bad weather, an email will be sent that morning, and we will meet at The Atelier, where I will have reference photos to work from.
No class on 7/4.
Plein-Air Workshop
with Scott Anderson

The workshop starts with a lecture and demonstration Friday evening at The Atelier to discuss materials, gear, and process. Attendees will then paint twice a day, Saturday and Sunday mornings and afternoons. Richard Lack once said that if you want to learn about color you paint outside. Focus will be on recognizing the values that capture the light in a scene and the way colors recede into distance. Composition will also be discussed as well as practical tips for working quickly.
Friday evening will be at The Atelier for a lecture, demonstration and Q&A. Saturday and Sunday will be two 3-hour sessions each day: 8:30am to 11:30am and 1:30pm to 4:30pm.
Friday, 6:30pm–9:30pm, Saturday & Sunday, 8:30am–4:30pm
